Sleep: Awake longer

In Partnership with Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota

At two months of age, your baby will sleep about 14 to 16 hours per day. This means he or she will be awake for longer periods during the day than before.

Through the night?

A few babies at this age will sleep through the night. But many take three or four months to develop regular nighttime sleep habits.

Occasionally, babies get their days and nights reversed. At times, it may seem like this happens all at once, but it usually occurs over several days.

You can do many things to help your baby sleep through the night.

  • Shorten the afternoon nap.
  • Increase the late evening feeding.
  • Keep your baby up later at night by playing with and entertaining him or her.
  • If he or she awakens in the night, comfort him or her. But don’t turn on the lights or play with him or her.
