He is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and an attending surgeon at the renowned Phillips Eye Institute, where he was a founding member and former Chief of Ophthalmology.
An internationally recognized expert who has focused his practice on refractive surgery for almost 20 years, Dr. Sher was one of the surgeons in the world to perform laser vision correction surgery and was one of the initial researchers to participate in the clinical trials that perfected this amazing surgical tool for the eye. Since 1989, Dr. Sher has performed thousands of laser refractive procedures.
An author and lecturer, Dr. Sher has written numerous scientific articles and textbook chapters on refractive surgery and related topics, and is frequently asked to lecture in the United States and abroad. He has also edited two textbooks devoted to refractive surgery.
Dr. Sher holds several patents for inventions related to refractive eye surgery. Additionally, he was presented with the prestigious Troutman Award from the International Society of Refractive Surgery for his paper and research on the development of a post-operative regimen for eye surgery which is used world-wide. He has received the Achievement Award from the AAO. Dr. Sher has also been a consultant to medical and ophthalmic companies in the U. S. and Europe. He has been honored by the US military, for his donation of laser vision correction surgery to deploying soldiers.
