Heart failure medicine interactions

The following list shows possible interactions of medicines that are commonly taken together to treat heart failure.

This list does not include every possible interaction, so please tell your health care provider about all the medicines you are taking (prescription, over-the-counter, herbals and vitamins).

You may need other treatments besides medicine to help your heart work better or to prevent serious problems.

    Medicine

Amiodarone (Cordarone®)
  • increased digoxin effect
  • increased INR/PT, increased chance for bleeding
Digoxin (Lanoxin®)
  • antacids that have aluminum
  • amiodarone (Cordarone®)
  • diuretic (such as furosemide, hydochlorothiazide)
  • quinidine
  • decreased digoxin effect
  • increased digoxin effect
  • decreased levels of potassium in your body, which may increase digoxin effect
ACE inhibitors (Captopril®, Enalapril®, Lisinopril®, Quinipril®)
  • aspirin
  • ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®)
  • ketoprofen (Orudis KT®)
  • naproxen (Aleve®, Naprosyn®)
  • all have decreased ACE inhibitor effect
Warfarin (Coumadin®)
  • alcohol
  • amiodarone (Cordarone®)
  • aspirin
  • cimetidine
  • hydrochlorothiazide
  • ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®)
  • ketoprofen (Orudis KT®)
  • naproxen (Aleve®, Naprosyn®)
  • quinidine
  • vitamin K (green, leafy vegetables)
  • first nine have increased INR/PT, increased chance for bleeding
  • vitamin K has decreased INR/PT, increased chance for blood clotting
