Your heart care team: Physical therapist If you have an operation or illness that affects your ability to function physically, your doctor may recommend that you work with a physical therapist to help you reach the highest level of functioning that's possible.
Physical therapists typically work in hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices and other nursing facilities. They can help to
- restore function
- improve mobility
- relieve pain
A physical therapist would learn your medical history and test your current strengths and abilities, and then work with you to develop a treatment plant geared toward the goal of getting you back to work, back to your normal activities, etc. They often work with your other health care providers, such as doctors, nurses and health educators.
Following your treatment plan with a physical therapist can make a big difference in your recovery. They can help you to push yourself -- safely -- when you might be less likely to do so on your own. They can give you invaluable advice about exercises you can do at home to keep yourself progressing, and they can play an important role in keeping you motivated as you work your way back to optimum health.
