Palliative Care: Best Practices for Advanced Illness (Minneapolis, Minn.)

This two-day intensive course provides foundational knowledge for the best practices of palliative care.

Interdisciplinary team members -- including physicians, physician assistants, nurses, chaplains, social workers, case managers, discharge planners, counselors, preceptors and patient care leaders -- will gain insight into caring for persons with advanced illness and their families.

After attending the course on Monday and Tuesday, September 29 and 30, participants should be able to:

  • describe how to improve the care for patients with advanced or terminal illness
  • discuss how personal experiences with serious illness, death and dying influence what we bring to professional roles
  • describe a holistic approach to pain and symptom management
  • identify patients' emotional and spiritual needs
  • describe the legal, ethical, cultural and communication issues faced while attending to patients and their families
  • understand the relationship between palliative care and hospice care
