Living with Diabetes
You are a key player on your health care team when it comes to managing your diabetes.

Herbs, minerals and diabetes control

These herbs and minerals may help lower blood sugar levels.

  • Chromium – Your body needs this mineral to process glucose. But too much can throw off blood sugar control.
  • Cinnamon – ¼ teaspoon a day acts as an insulin substitute, helping with the delivery of glucose.
  • Magnesium – Studies suggest that not enough magnesium worsens type 2 diabetes. Whole grains, nuts and green leafy vegetables are good sources.
  • Vanadium – This herb might improve insulin sensitivity. Tiny amounts are found in plants and animals.

Talk with your doctor, diabetes educator or dietitian before trying an herb or mineral. Ask if it could interfere with your medicine or cause low blood sugar. Also ask how much is right for you to take.
