How to prevent or live with arthritis

A healthy diet and a well-balanced fitness plan form the best way to prevent or live with most chronic conditions. Arthritis is no exception.

  • A healthy diet -- Drink plenty of water. Avoid saturated fat and trans fatty acids, like those found in margarine. Eat complex carbohydrates like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and whole-wheat pasta. Stay away from snack foods, which often have hydrogenated fats. Get most of your protein from fish and dried beans rather than fatty meats.
  • A well-balanced fitness plan -- Participate in a variety of activities. A good fitness plan includes aerobic, strength and flexibility work. Regular exercise can help you control weight, which takes pressure off your joints. It can also help you build muscle, a good way to provide support to your joints.

For help getting started with a healthy eating and exercise program, talk to your physician, a nutritionist, a physical therapist or another health care professional.
